SDBA is deeply saddened by the passing of Life Member and former board member, Ken O’Donnell.
Joining the Sharks in the early 1970s, Ken dedicated many years to the association, giving his time selflessly in various roles. His contributions, from coaching to ensuring the growth of our facilities and supporting generations of players all helped to shape the club into what it is today. His legacy will always be a part of SDBA.
We extend our deepest condolences to the O’Donnell family during this difficult time.
A note below from Ken’s family:
“With sadness we want to inform you of the passing of Life Member Ken O’Donnell. Ken passed away Tuesday 28 January at the age of 83. Ken had been unwell for the past couple of years. Ken is survived by his wife Shirley and his sons Scott, Simon and Trina.
Ken served on the board of Sutherland Basketball from 1973 to 2002. For his service to the Association he was granted life membership in 1988. During his time on the board some of the major achievements he contributed to were the building of both the first and second stages of the stadium. Ken was a tireless worker. He could always be counted to put his hand up for any task required. As well as serving on the board Ken coached various teams.
For Sutherland he coached junior teams as well as coaching the men’s youth league team from the late 80’s into the early 90’s. Ken also coached extensively at the club level (when there were clubs). Ken coached both boys and girls teams for many years at the Sylvania Heights Club. Ken himself was a very good player having represented NSW at the senior level.
Ken’s son Simon and daughter Trina played representative basketball for many years at Sutherland. Ken was instrumental in their development. Simon went on to play college basketball in the US and in the NBL.
Ken will be remembered for his tireless work ethic, his dry sense of humour and his basketball IQ.
Ken’s funeral be held at Woronora Memorial Park, South Chapel, at 11 am on Friday 7th February. The reception will be held at Cronulla Surf Club (where he was also a life member) from 1 pm.”
