Understanding the pathway helps you know where to start and where to go next:

Community Coach – Entry-level, required for all new coaches.

Club Coach (Level 1) – For those coaching at rep or higher levels.

Association Coach – Advanced level, typically for senior or performance squads.

Performance Coach – Elite-level accreditation for high-performance coaching environments.
To coach in any junior representative or development capacity, you’ll need:

Completion of the Basketball Australia Community Coaching Course (minimum requirement for all coaches, including domestic)

NCAS (National Coaching Accreditation Scheme) Club Coach Accreditation – this is required for Head and Assistant Coaches in the Representative Program and is not required for domestic-level coaching. A valid Working With Children Check (WWCC)

Valid SDBA/BNSW registration

Completion of the Safe Coaching module via Play by the Rules – required as part of the Club Coach Accreditation for representative-level coaches. This module is not mandatory for domestic-level coaching unless you are pursuing accreditation.

The Sutherland District Basketball Association (SDBA) aims to provide athletes with a high-performance-based environment that fosters growth both on and off the court. Coaches play an integral role in creating and maintaining this environment, and as such, SDBA places significant importance on selecting the right coach for each representative team.
COACH APPOINTMENT PROCESS:
Interested head coaches must complete and submit the official 2027 coach application form by the specified due date.
An independent and non-conflicted selection panel will be assembled to assess head coach applications.
Applicants may be required to participate in an in-person or phone interview to support their application. The selection panel will conduct interviews at a time and location suitable to all parties.
The final coaching appointments will be provided to BNSW and the SDBA board for ratification.
Coaches will be notified of the outcome of their application prior to the appointments being made public through the SDBA website and social media.
SELECTION GUIDELINES:
The following criteria shall be used to assess an application by the selection panel.
· Athlete development: Demonstrated experience in skill development training, program delivery and basketball concepts education.
· Technical and tactical basketball knowledge: Detailed understanding of technical and tactical basketball strategies, current basketball trends, ability to develop effective game plans and make in-game adjustments.
· Leadership and Communication: Demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire athletes, set clear expectations, and effectively communicate instructions and feedback to athletes and build working relationships with parents/guardians through effective communication.
· Continuous Learning and Professional Development: Demonstrated willingness to attend coaching clinics, pursue additional certifications, and stay updated with the latest coaching methodologies.
· Collaboration with the Organisation: Demonstrated willingness to collaborate with the Sutherland District Basketball Association and adhere to its policies and guidelines.
· Experience: Previous coaching experience, success and qualifications.
· Coaches must be a registered member of SDBA and BNSW.
· Coaches must support SDBA development philosophies and comply with BNSW policies.
SPECIAL NOTES:
· SDBA reserves the right to defer the announcement of parent coaches until after trials to allow for an unconflicted player selection process. In such cases, some or all coaches within the age group may not be allocated a division until after player selections are complete.
· SDBA encourages junior coaches not to coach the same playing group for more than three consecutive years, unless approved by the committee, based on development outcomes and coach availability.
